Background of the Study
Deforestation in Ondo West Local Government Area, Ondo State, poses a severe threat to rural livelihoods that depend on forest resources for sustenance and economic activity. The removal of trees for commercial logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructural development has led to significant ecological imbalances, directly affecting rural communities (Oluwole, 2023). Forests provide essential resources such as firewood, medicinal plants, and non-timber products that are crucial for the survival and economic well-being of rural households (Adegoke, 2024). The loss of forest cover not only diminishes these resources but also contributes to soil erosion, reduced agricultural productivity, and altered local climate conditions. Recent research underscores the interconnectedness of environmental degradation and economic hardship in rural areas (Balogun, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted impact of deforestation on rural livelihoods by analyzing changes in resource availability, income generation, and socio-economic resilience. The findings aim to provide a basis for sustainable forest management and rural development policies that mitigate the adverse effects of deforestation.
Statement of the Problem
Rural communities in Ondo West are experiencing declining livelihoods due to rampant deforestation. The loss of forest resources has led to reduced availability of fuel, food, and medicinal products, resulting in diminished household incomes and increased poverty levels (Akinyemi, 2024). Inadequate reforestation efforts and unsustainable land use practices further exacerbate these challenges. This study seeks to investigate the direct correlation between deforestation and economic hardships in rural areas, aiming to identify sustainable solutions that can restore both the environment and the economic viability of affected communities.
Objectives of the Study:
• To assess the extent of deforestation and its impact on rural resource availability.
• To evaluate the economic consequences of deforestation on rural livelihoods.
• To recommend sustainable forest management practices to support rural development.
Research Questions:
• How has deforestation affected the availability of natural resources in rural areas?
• What economic impacts do rural households face as a result of deforestation?
• What sustainable measures can be implemented to mitigate deforestation effects?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Deforestation significantly reduces natural resource availability for rural communities.
• H2: Economic hardship among rural households is directly linked to deforestation.
• H3: Sustainable forest management practices improve rural livelihood outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant for understanding the impact of deforestation on rural livelihoods in Ondo West. Its findings will help policymakers develop sustainable forest management strategies that protect natural resources and improve rural economic conditions (Olayinka, 2023; Adewale, 2025). The recommendations are intended to enhance both environmental conservation and the socio-economic well-being of rural communities, fostering long-term sustainable development.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of deforestation on rural livelihoods in Ondo West Local Government Area, Ondo State. It focuses on resource availability, economic impacts, and sustainable management, excluding broader national deforestation issues. Data are collected exclusively from local rural communities and environmental assessments.
Definitions of Terms:
• Deforestation: The removal of trees and forest cover from an area.
• Rural Livelihoods: Economic activities and means of sustenance for rural populations.
• Sustainable Forest Management: Practices aimed at conserving forest resources while supporting economic needs.
